In a significant initiative aimed at enhancing the capacity of migration management, the Ministry of Home Affairs, in its role as chair of the Migration Management Task Force (MMTF), collaborated with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) to conduct a two-day workshop focused on climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction.
Held at Esibayeni Lodge, the
workshop brought together stakeholders from various sectors to deepen their
understanding of the critical nexus between Migration, Environment, and Climate
Change (MECC). Emphasizing the importance of integrating these components into
policy and practice, the session highlighted the urgent need to address the
implications of climate change on human mobility.
Participants engaged in
discussions that centered on the linkages between migration and disaster risk
reduction (DRR), drawing insights from IOM’s comprehensive training manual as
well as the UNFCCC Technical Guide on Mainstreaming Migration into National
Adaptation Plans. The workshop underscored key themes such as climate
adaptation, resilience-building, and the imperative of addressing loss and
damage in accordance with the Paris Agreement.
"Climate change is one
of the most pressing challenges of our time, and it affects not just our
environment, but also our communities and livelihoods," said Gcebile
Dlamini, a representative from the National Disaster Management Agency.
"By equipping the MMTF with the necessary technical knowledge, we are
taking important steps towards ensuring that our migration policies are aligned
with our climate goals."
The workshop facilitated an
exchange of best practices and experiences among participants, fostering
collaboration and encouraging innovative solutions to tackle the challenges
posed by climate change. Attendees emphasized the need for a coordinated
approach to integrate migration considerations into national and local
adaptation strategies.
As nations worldwide grapple
with the realities of climate change and its impact on human mobility, events
like this workshop are crucial for building resilient communities capable of
adapting to changing environmental conditions.
The Ministry of Home
Affairs, together with IOM and NDMA, remains committed to advancing the
dialogue on migration and climate resilience, ensuring that future policies
reflect a holistic understanding of these interconnected issues.
