HOME AFFAIRS, IOM AND NDMA LAUNCH PROJECT TO ADDRESS MIGRATION AND CLIMATE CHANGE IN ESWATINI
In a
significant effort to enhance resilience against the challenges posed by
migration, the environment, and climate change, the International Organization
for Migration (IOM) collaborated with the National Disaster Management Agency
(NDMA) and the Migration Management Task Force (MMTF)—a multi-sectoral platform
overseen by the Ministry of Home Affairs—organized a two-day project inception
meeting. This meeting was focused on launching a project designed to strengthen
Eswatini’s capacity to tackle the nexus of migration, environment, and climate
change (MECC)
The
MMTF includes representatives from various key government ministries, civil
society organizations, private sector actors, and UN agencies, ensuring a
comprehensive approach to the challenges at hand. Participating entities
include the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Tourism and Environment,
Ministry of Labour, Human Rights Commission, Business Eswatini, the
Coordinating Assembly of Non-Governmental Organizations (CANGO), Ministry of
Tinkhundla Administration and Development, World Food Programme (WFP), United
Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP).
The
primary objective of the inception meeting was to formally introduce the
project to MMTF members, clarify its objectives and expected outcomes, and
secure active stakeholder engagement for the development and implementation of
the MECC Strategy. It also provided a platform for collaborative planning,
during which participants co-developed and endorsed a detailed work plan
outlining roles, responsibilities, and timelines for project activities.
During
the meeting, the main activities of the project were presented, marking the
formal launch and setting the tone for collaborative engagement throughout the
project’s lifecycle. The gathering underscored Eswatini’s commitment to
addressing climate-induced mobility through integrated, gender-sensitive, and
rights-based approaches.
As
environmental challenges continue to pose significant risks to populations,
this project represents a vital effort to empower communities in Eswatini to
adapt and thrive amidst changing climate conditions. Through cooperation and a
focus on rights and inclusivity, the IOM and NDMA are paving the way for a more
resilient future for all citizens.
