ESITSATSAWENI ROYAL KRAAL REVIVES REPORTING CUSTOM AMID INFLUX OF ASYLUM SEEKERS
The traditional leadership of Esitsatsaweni
Royal Kraal has revived a vital Eswatini custom aimed at reporting newly
arrived individuals in the community. This initiative comes in response to an
awareness campaign led by the Ministry of Home Affairs, which addresses the
increasing number of asylum seekers from Mozambique arriving at the Malindza
Reception Centre.
The campaign, which took place yesterday, seeks
to educate community members about the importance of monitoring and reporting
new arrivals, particularly in light of the ongoing crisis in neighboring
Mozambique. The initiative saw collaborative efforts from various departments,
including the Lubombo Regional Administration office, immigration and refugee
departments, health services, the Ubutfo Eswatini Defense Force (UEDF), and
local police authorities.
Activities during the campaign included
informative sessions on defining who qualifies as an asylum seeker or refugee,
outlining the asylum-seeking process, and discussing migration patterns at both
legal and informal points of entry. Participants were also made aware of health
and security concerns associated with the arrival of new community members.
The campaign received a warm welcome from the
community. Speaking on behalf of the residents, the Indvuna expressed gratitude
to all stakeholders for taking the time to educate the community, especially on
a weekend. “Your efforts in addressing this pressing issue and ensuring our
community is informed are deeply appreciated,” the Indvuna remarked.
The initiative will continue on Tuesday,
January 14, 2025, when the campaign moves to the Mhlumeni Royal Kraal, further
extending the outreach and educational efforts to ensure the community remains
vigilant and well-informed regarding the influx of new residents.
This revival of tradition underscores the
community’s commitment to fostering a safe and secure environment while
addressing the humanitarian needs arising from regional conflicts.
