MANANGA BORDER TO EXTEND OPERATING HOURS AMID POTENTIAL LEBOMBO BORDER POST DISRUPTION

In a bid to accommodate the anticipated surge in cross-border movements between South Africa and Eswatini, Mananga border will operate extended hours from 0700hrs to 2000hrs until January 15, 2025. The decision emerged following a pivotal meeting today between the Border Management Authority (BMA) of South Africa and the Eswatini Immigration Department at the Mananga border post.

The collaborative discussion aimed to evaluate the readiness of Mananga border in light of the impending escalation in traveler traffic between the two nations. This strategic move comes as a proactive measure amidst concerns surrounding potential disruptions in operations at the Lebombo border post in Komatipoort, Mpumalanga scheduled for the upcoming week following the Mozambican Constitutional Court results announcement on Monday December 23, 2024.

Dr. Michael Masiapato, the Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), confirmed during a press briefing the extension of Mananga border's operational hours. He reiterated the extension from 0700hrs to 2000hrs as a temporary measure to streamline the facilitation of border crossings in response to the heightened demand.

Echoing this sentiment, Eswatini's Chief Immigration Officer, Mthokozisi Dlamini, expressed assurance regarding Mananga border's preparedness to manage the anticipated influx of travelers seamlessly. Noteworthy is the strategic positioning of Mananga border, offering an alternative route for individuals heading to Mozambique, enabling them to reach either the Mhlumeni or Lomahasha border posts ahead of the midnight closure.

Additionally, the economic benefits for Eswatini are underscored, particularly concerning road toll revenues, given the projected influx of predominantly foreign-registered vehicles crossing the border. This notable development not only enhances cross-border connectivity but also underscores the collaborative efforts and proactive measures adopted by both South Africa and Eswatini in ensuring the efficacy of border operations amidst evolving circumstances.

As the extended operating hours take effect, Mananga border stands poised to serve as a pivotal gateway fostering enhanced regional connectivity and facilitating smoother transits for travelers navigating between South Africa and Eswatini.
